Golisano Institute for Sustainability

What is sustainability?

The 1987 “Our Common Future” report of the World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable production systems are the cornerstone of sustainable development. These are systems that create goods and services using strategies and processes that are: non-polluting; conserving of energy and natural resources; economically viable; safe and healthful for workers, communities, and consumers; and socially and creatively rewarding for all working people.

What is GIS?

Sustainable production systems are the focus of academic and research programs within Golisano Institute for Sustainably, which is an independent academic and research institute at RIT. GIS consists of a team of tenure and tenure track faculty, research faculty, engineers, technicians, project managers, and students all dedicated to an interdisciplinary approach to removing barriers to achieving sustainable production systems. GIS currently offers a Ph.D. in Sustainability where students have the opportunitity to conduct their doctoral research in conjunction with one of GIS’ research center and laboratories. Graduates will have skills in life cycle assessment, environmental risk and impact assessment, design for the environment; knowledge of corporate strategies for sustainability; and government policies for promoting sustainability.
